Sorry Apple
So I watched the whole iPad announcement from yesterday and I am not convinced that I will ever need one of these new devices. My iPhone gives me The Internet and Mobile apps in my pocket, my laptop gives me The Internet and all my applications in my backpack, the iPad will give me The Internet and mobile apps on a 10 inch screen. Tell me again why I need this "Magical" new device? I just don't see the value. Gadget envy will likely sell many of these devices, some will buy it just because Apple made it. I won't be buying one.

I agree.
ReplyDeleteHi Curt,
ReplyDeleteI'm with you on this one, but never say "never". A front webcam is missing, a virtual keyboard with sensitive feedback also, but I think that more will come within the next 6 months.
I'll be waiting...
Thoughts on killer apps for iPad:
ReplyDelete1. ECM back end retrieval. Reading on it will be much better and easier than small devices.
2. Medical records apps - nurses and docs are so mobile and need lots on the screen
3. Games of course
@Rob - adding to the list if I may;
ReplyDeleteVirtual Presence - if it has accelerometers, it could be used to remotely control a web cam tilt/pan zoom by holding it up like a picture frame. Think controlling EOD bomb disposal robots or remote inspection via robot in tight places. The ability to "look around" a remote location just by moving your window on that location would be great, and doable with a light weight device that offers a wide viewing area.
Well Games seems to be the only "Mainstream" use mentioned so far. I have a wii and a xbox 360 for that. I guess if I ever feel the need to be gaming at the park, I will consider an iPad....no, I will just use my iPhone.
ReplyDelete@Rob Novak - you nailed it with the medical records apps. Because the main interface is a single nonporous piece of glass it is very easy to keep clean, and work exceptionally well in exam rooms, ERs, etc.
ReplyDeleteTo really hit this target market, Apple needs to add a webcam, flash capability, and integrated fingerprint and smartcard readers. Which would make it a perfect platform for BONES: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v-BnYIYHjm1qo
